Winter Dangers Spark Road Safety Campaigns - Friday, November 28, 2008
The onset of winter is sparking fears over the number of accidents that may occur in the coming months and prompting calls for a greater awareness of the risks being faced on UK roads. Darkness and poor weather conditions make roads especially treacherous during winter but safety awareness campaigns by Mercedes-Benz, online hire firm CarRentals and road safety charity Brake are all gaining momentum. Together they promote better preparation and greater risk assessment.

As well as these preventative measures, minimising casualties through the most effective protection methods possible is a major priority for the UK government. To find out how installing the right safety barriers can mean the difference between life and death, read this month's spotlight below.

Smashing Barriers
Road safety barriers are often the last line of protection for motorway drivers. A basic necessity on the UK's growing network of motorways and roads, the implementation and design of such systems was historically the full responsibility of the Highways Agency. Today, however, the government organisation works hand in hand with a number of road barrier manufacturers and industry associations to ensure such facilities are fully optimised and that the agency's move towards using concrete barriers is upheld.

It is along the major transport routes of motorways and important A roads that the pressures of road safety management are most severe. To find out why the UK government thinks concrete barriers can halt the number of casualties, please click here.
