Autoliv is set to supply its 77GHz high-resolution radar systems to an undisclosed global car manufacturer for autonomous driving.

The company’s radars will be positioned on the four corners of the vehicle and allow for increased detection points. This will give improved ability to understand free space, better object separation in multiple target environments.

Autoliv Electronics president Johan Löfvenholm said: “With our vision of saving more lives and quality first as guiding lights, we continue our journey to further strengthen our leadership in automotive safety.

“We have developed state-of-the-art radar systems that are critical to the advancement of autonomous driving.”

The radar systems are capable of autonomously managing lane changes during highway driving as they can detect oncoming vehicles.

Radars on the front corner support object and free space detections, while the rear corner radars contribute to object detection, blind spot warning, and rear cross traffic alert.

Recently, Autoliv collaborated with computer vision based human sensing technologies provider 'Seeing Machines' to develop new driver monitoring systems (DMS) for autonomous vehicles.

By accurately measuring eye and head position, driver attention and fatigue, the DMS can detect distracted and drowsy drivers and invoke action in the event of a dangerous scenario.

Within the collaboration, Autoliv served as the Tier 1 supplier to automotive OEMs to produce the driver monitoring systems for future awarded business.
