The Government of Canada plans to invest $93m to improve highways, roads and bridges in Ontario.

The government stated that currently 23 new construction projects are underway in eastern Ontario this year, thereby creating approximately 1,000 construction jobs.

The province is investing in public infrastructure on a significant scale, about CAD160bn ($121.6bn) over a period of 12 years.

This investment will support nearly 110,000 jobs annually across the province, with projects on roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals.

Recently, Ontario officially opened the 16.5km long High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes, providing a new travel option for commuters as well as improving traffic flow, maximising highway capacity and helping manage congestion.

The HOT is claimed to be the first of its kind in Canada.

Since 2015, Ontario has announced support for more than 475 road projects.

The latest investment is part of the government's economic plan to develop Ontario.
