The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has completed substantial work as part of the Phase II of the New York State Route 281 in Cortland County.

The $17.8m infrastructure project included widening and reconstruction of the 1.4-mile portion of the Route 281 in the town of Cortlandville and the city of Cortland. This widening and reconstruction works were carried out in a commercially developed segment of the corridor, which connects motorists travelling from I-81 through Cortland into Ithaca.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said: "This reconstruction project alleviates traffic on a busy stretch of highway while providing significant traffic safety improvements for both motorists and pedestrians.

"Investing in infrastructure improvements across the state, benefits residents and travellers alike, as well as paving the way for future growth."

The construction works were carried out between Luker Road and Fisher Avenue. Improvements were previously carried out to the road during Phase I in 2008 and 2009.

"This reconstruction project alleviates traffic on a busy stretch of highway while providing significant traffic safety improvements for both motorists and pedestrians."

Under the second phase, extra turning lanes and double lanes were added to make it easier for motorists to travel within city and town limits.

The bridge over Dry Creek was replaced with lanes and shoulders matching those on the approaches.

The project had also seen the installation of a closed drainage system with the addition of two retention ponds, and intersection improvements, and additional sidewalks along both sides of Route 281.

New York State Department of Transportation commissioner Matthew Driscoll said: "This project further enhances the ability to move goods and services in Cortland County while improving mobility for drivers and pedestrians.

"New York roads and bridges are a pathway to economic development opportunities, and this project enhances the quality of life for the people in Cortland County who depend on this road every day."

The project will be fully completed once landscaping works and smaller planting projects are finished.
