Acusensus to trial cameras on M4 and Anzac Parade in Sydney

The Government of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia has awarded a contract to Acusensus to trial mobile phone detection cameras on the M4 Motorway and Anzac Parade in Sydney.

The world-first technology catches drivers illegally using mobile phones and aims to promote road safety among motorists.

Three technology firms participated in the testing period and Acusensus was selected to trial its cameras.

Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Melinda Pavey said that the cameras have already detected more than 11,000 drivers using their mobile phones during a month-long test in October.

Pavey said: “Shockingly, one driver was pictured with two hands on his phone while his passenger steered the car travelling at 80 km/h, putting everyone on the road at risk.”

Beginning in January, cameras will be installed on the M4 Motorway and Anzac Parade and no fines will be issued during this period. However, drivers found illegally using mobile phones will receive warning letters.

The new system, which is capable of operating 24/7 in all weather conditions, uses high-definition cameras and artificial intelligence to detect offending drivers illegally using their phone.

Pavey further added: “If at the end of the trial the technology proves to be foolproof, the community will be made aware of its permanent use.”

“I strongly believe this technology will change driver behaviour and save lives.”

Pavey also reported that, “74% of the NSW community support the use of cameras to enforce mobile phone offences.”
