American company Affectiva is set to unveil its Mobile Lab solution at Artificial Emotional Intelligence Summit to be held in Boston, US, on 6 September.

The Mobile Lab car features the first multi-modal in-cabin sensing solution, Affectiva Automotive AI. It will demonstrate how artificial intelligence (AI) can make driving safer in semi and fully autonomous vehicles.

Data has revealed that more than 1,000 injuries can be attributed to distracted driving each day in the US, while more than 6,000 fatal crashes may be caused by drowsy driving every year.

In Affectiva’s Mobile Lab, participants can experience how automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers are using Affectiva Automotive AI to build advanced driver monitor systems (DMS) that help to stop drowsy and distracted driving.

“Mobile Lab showcases the important role that Affectiva Automotive AI will have in offering OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers better driver insights.”

The Mobile Lab is equipped with an in-cabin camera that tracks the participants’ cognitive and emotional states.

Once the camera detects moderate or extreme drowsiness, the Mobile Lab will imitate a vehicle adaptation by providing the driver with an alert through the centre console display.

Additionally, the Mobile Lab simulation will trigger an alert advising the driver to increase their concentration to prevent accidents.

In addition to recognising dangerous driving behaviour, Mobile Lab showcases the important role that Affectiva Automotive AI will have in offering OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers better driver insights.

Affectiva co-founder and CEO Dr Rana el Kaliouby said: “By debuting our Mobile Lab at the Emotion AI Summit, we are giving attendees a glimpse into the future of mobility.

“As the auto industry continues on its path to autonomy, and consumers’ expectations of how they engage with technology evolves, it’s important to consider how humans and AI will successfully partner with each other.”
