Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a AED500m ($136.12m) contract to build Al Khawaneej Corridor and Mushrif Park Improvement Project.

The project includes the construction of three main junctions at Al Khawneej and Al Amardi Streets and service roads extending 23km.

In addition, the project will focus on connecting Al Awir and Al Khawaneej areas and improving accessibility to Airport Street.

RTA director-general and board of executive directors chairman Mattar Al Tayer said: “The project aims to accommodate the current and projected growth in the traffic volumes over the next years.

“It provides a direct link between Al Awir and Al Khawaneej to ease the movement of local residents in both directions. It will enhance the link between Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan and Emirates Roads, and cut the delay to just 45 seconds in this sector.

“The project aims to accommodate the current and projected growth in the traffic volumes over the next years.”

“It will also improve the traffic flow on Al Khawaneej and Al Amardi Roads, and reduce the delay time in the area from 120 to 60 seconds.”

The contract also includes construction of an underpass of three lanes in each direction on Al Khawaneej Street together with a surface signalised junction to streamline traffic flow.

In addition, the existing roundabout at the intersection of Khawaneej-Amardi Roads will be upgraded to a signalised junction.

A flyover of two lanes in each direction crossing over Emirates Road in the direction of Al Awir will be constructed, which will improve the intersection of Al Amardi Street and Emirates Road.

Furthermore, a footbridge will be built on Al Khawaneej Street near the Arabian Centre to ease pedestrians’ movement.

The contractor will also be responsible for completing associated works such as rainwater drainage systems, road marking, traffic signs, and required protection works for road safety.
