Materials supplier Breedon Group has won a contract from construction firm Balfour Beatty to supply and lay surfacing on a section of the A9 dualling programme in Scotland.

The scope of work for Breedon will include supplying and laying material on a 9.5km section of the A9 between Luncarty and Pass of Birnam.

This will be the newest stretch to be widened to full dual carriageway as part of Transport Scotland’s £3bn upgrade of 129km of the A9 between Perth and Inverness.

Breedon will also deliver structural concrete and a substantial volume of the required aggregates.

Keeping its operational base at its Loak Farm sand and gravel pit near the project’s centre, the company will set up a mobile asphalt plant and concrete plant for the scheme.

Breedon will use supplies of aggregates from Loak and its neighbouring quarries at Shierglas and Clatchard, along with high PSV stone from Barbae Quarry.

Breedon Northern managing director Alan Mackenzie said: “We’re delighted to be playing our part in one of the most important infrastructure projects in Scotland, which is designed to deliver economic growth through improved road safety and reliable and quicker journey times, as well as better links to pedestrian and cycling facilities.”

The company operates 35 quarries, 16 asphalt plants, more than 40 ready-mixed concrete plants, three concrete products plants and an extensive contract surfacing business in Scotland.
