Construction on a new 80m road bridge has begun in Victoria, Australia across the Patterson River, linking Bonbeach and Carrum via Station Street.

The commencement of construction works represents the start of the A$588m ($455m) project, which includes removal of four level crossings, revitalisation of Carrum village along with a new beach promenade.

Demolition works of the old bridge have begun, while piling works for the new road bridge are expected to start next month.

The new Patterson River road bridge is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year and will offer safer and more direct routes for local traffic.

It will also have walking and cycling paths to enable safe access to the new Carrum Station, the beach and surrounding suburbs.

“The local community advocated for the new road bridge and we’re building it. Construction has started and cars will travel on the new road bridge by the end of the year.”

Member for Carrum Sonya Kilkenny said: “The local community advocated for the new road bridge and we’re building it. Construction has started and cars will travel on the new road bridge by the end of the year.”

The Victorian Government also announced the opening of a major interchange upgrade at Ravenswood, 16km south of Bendigo. It forms part of a vital connection linking many regional centres across Victoria’s north.

The A$86m ($66.6m) upgrade, jointly funded by the state and federal governments, is expected to decrease traffic congestion, as well as improve safety for motorists travelling to Melbourne.

Victoria Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said that the upgrade will improve safety for the 13,000 drivers using these roads daily, while supporting the freight industry.
