A consortium of Budimex and Strabag has secured a €111m design-build contract from the Polish General Directorate for National Roads and Highways (GDDKiA) for the A1 highway between Tuszyn and Bełchatów, Poland.

Under the contract, Strabag will construct a 16km section of the A1 highway. The company’s share in the contract will account for 50%.

Both Budimex and Strabag will be responsible for planning and the subsequent execution of the design.

The entire section between Tuszyn and Bełchatów will be constructed using concrete, with two lanes in each direction.

“Work under the contract is scheduled to take place for 32 months, with project design taking place from mid-December to mid-March.”

The contract also involves developing two junctions, 17 bridges, several intersections and access roads, noise barriers and wildlife crossings.

Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel said: “The A1 in Poland is an important link between the ports in the north of the country and the south of Europe. We are pleased to have again received an order for a section in the course of the expansion of the A1.”

Work under the contract is scheduled to take place for 32 months, with project design taking place from mid-December to mid-March.

Strabag is a European-based technology group and provides construction services across industries.

Currently, the company has around 73,000 employees and generates an annual output volume of more than €14bn.

Last month, the consortium of Budimex and Ferrovial Agroman started road works with regard to the construction of Trasa Łagiewnicka, which included the arterial road, tunnels, two-level crossings, two bridges, and remodelling the Wilga riverbed.

The complete project is slated for completion by 31 December 2020.
