eyeSight Technologies and Spanish car manufacturer SEAT have collaborated to introduce advanced sensing technology that will be able to detect driver distractions in cars and accordingly initiate precautionary measures through the car’s safety systems.

Equipped with an IR sensor, the new driver monitoring solution, enabled by a new level of learning and fine-tuned computer vision, continuously analyses the driver’s attention to the road.

Once the solution detects any form of drowsiness or distraction on the part of the driver, it will notify the car systems to alert the driver.

It can also initiate proactive action through safety systems, including the activation of a wake-up sequence.

eyeSight Technologies CEO Gideon Shmuel said: “Our experience in this field and vision for intelligent control of the in-car environment will enhance the driver experience and help prevent distracted driving.

“SEAT’s collaboration with eyeSight Technologies underscores our commitment to driver safety.”

“With the market transition to semi-autonomous cars, it’s vital that automotive solutions provide the highest quality of driver awareness technology.”

The introduction of eyeSight’s driver monitoring solution is expected to facilitate safer driving performance on roads.

SEAT Innovation and Patent Department head Stefan Ilijevic said: “SEAT’s collaboration with eyeSight Technologies underscores our commitment to driver safety.

“Distraction and drowsiness are factors that cause more than 30% of all traffic collisions, but with the help of eyeSight’s advanced driver monitoring technology, our goal is to help significantly reduce these distractions and to make driving a safer endeavour.”
