Gammon Construction has won a road construction contract worth HK$6.2bn ($793m) in Hong Kong.

Under the contract awarded by the Highways Department of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Gammon will be responsible for constructing the Kai Tak West Section of the Central Kowloon Route.

The scope of the contract includes construction of a 370m-long underwater tunnel and the associated temporary reclamation in Kowloon Bay of about 3ha.

Gammon will also construct a 160m-long cut and cover tunnel in Ma Tau Kok and a 125m-long depressed road, 170m-long underpass in Kai Tak Development.

The contract is said to be a vital part of the overall Central Kowloon Route, a 4.7km-long, dual three-lane strategic trunk road in Central Kowloon route.

“We are delighted to be working with the Highways Department again and to be able to utilise our considerable in-house capabilities.”

Construction work is scheduled to commence early this year, with completion expected in 2025. The project will provide jobs to 400 people during peak construction period.

Gammon Construction chief executive Thomas Ho said: “We are delighted to be working with the Highways Department again and to be able to utilise our considerable in-house capabilities, including foundations, design, concrete supply and steel fabrication to deliver the works to the highest standards.”

The company noted that it plans to maximise the use of modularisation for elements of the works in delivering the project.

Furthermore, it will use its piling technology to construct the temporary wall for excavation works.
