Web mapping service Google Maps has rolled out new features in India that alert motorists about speed cameras and accidents.

Previously the functions have been introduced in countries such as Australia, Russia, Brazil, the US, the UK, Mexico, Canada and Indonesia.

The navigation software will inform drivers about speed cameras installed a few kilometres ahead on their route. Google Maps also shows the number of users reporting incident or speed camera location.

A flashing red icon appears on the map to warn motorists about an accident ahead so they can take an alternative route.

Currently, the feature can only be accessed on Android smartphones. However, the American technology company may introduce the feature for iOS devices soon.

“The features are user dependent, meaning users will have to report the location of speed cameras or accidents on their route, which are subsequently shown on the map.”

Through the new features, Google aims to provide commuters with a seamless journey while also enabling them to predict road conditions.

In addition to speed camera and accidents, Google Maps also shows toll booths, alternate routes, live traffic and estimated time of arrival to commuters.

It is believed that Google Maps’ latest features will enable road users to avoid paying fines while making travel safe by reminding the drivers to maintain a safe speed.

India is among the countries that see the highest number of accidents every year and over-speeding is said to be one of the primary reasons for the accidents.
