Wholly-owned Granite subsidiary Kenny Construction Company has secured a $39m contract from the Illinois Department of Transportation for the Westbound I-90 project in Chicago, Illinois, US.

The project runs from I-190 to the westbound Harlem Avenue entrance ramp.

I-90 is considered as a major east-west transportation route and link in the nation’s transportation system.

A section of the route between Chicago-O’Hare International Airport and the City of Chicago’s central business district transports people and goods on a regional and local level within Illinois.

I-90 also provides a direct connection to the airport through I-190.

“Construction of six new retaining walls, as well as repairs to five existing retaining walls, will take place as part of the project.”

Kenny will be responsible for the construction of an auxiliary lane between Canfield Road and Harlem Avenue, a westbound collector-distributor road.

The project includes ramp modifications at Cumberland Avenue, Canfield Road, and Harlem Avenue interchanges to tie into the widened mainline pavement.

Construction of six new retaining walls, as well as repairs to five existing retaining walls, will take place as part of the project.

The existing retaining wall at the westbound Canfield Road exit ramp will also be reconstructed due to a realignment of the ramp.

Resurfacing of westbound I-90 from I-190 to Harlem Avenue will also be carried out as part of the project.

Kenny intends to begin construction works later this year and expects to complete the project by 2020.

Last month, Granite secured $29m from the Merced County Department of Public Works for an expressway construction project in Merced, California.

As part of this contract, Granite will construct an extension to the four-lane Campus Parkway expressway on the east side of the City of Merced to connect Highway 99 to the University of California, Merced.

Construction is scheduled to begin next month and will be concluded in February 2020.
