Inrix has entered a three-year agreement with Michigan Department of Transportation (DOT) to provide traffic services that will help the transport authority to monitor, measure and manage the state’s road network.

Inrix services will enable Michigan DOT to reduce the cost of operations, identify areas that benefit most from road improvements, and more accurately report the impact of transportation investments.

Michigan DOT intelligent transport services engineer Mike Wroblewski said: “Inrix real-time traffic services and analytics will help us to actively manage statewide traffic and more accurately measure and report impacts on our roadways.”

The transportation analytics provider will also help Michigan DOT in managing its road network by providing access to on-demand data to analyse, visualise and understand performance without the need for additional technology investments.

“As part of the agreement, Inrix will also provide real-time and historical traffic data to the Michigan DOT in order to support its traffic management and operations.”

Inrix also offers analytics to transportation planners in collaboration with University of Maryland’s CATT Lab, which enable them to perform before and after studies, quantify, and communicate the impact of road projects.

The analytics also help planners to monitor and identify performance trends on roadways, as well as produce and report key performance indicators on travel times and congestion reduction.

As part of the agreement, Inrix will also provide real-time and historical traffic data to the Michigan DOT in order to support its traffic management and operations.

Inrix Real-Time Traffic Flow makes use of real-time GPS data from connected vehicles and devices to deliver traffic information on freeways, highways, interstates and major roads.

Inrix also allows transportation agencies to monitor live traffic data, including road name, time, current speed, typical speed and travel time.

Inrix global public sector vice-president and general manager Scott Sedlik said: “We are proud to supply road safety and traffic information that improves system management and incident response, as well as delivers better information to travellers in Michigan.

“By identifying consistent and problematic traffic patterns, transportation officials can pinpoint the source of congestion and prioritize mobility investments that directly reduce gridlock.”
