HERE Technologies has introduced a cloud-based services suite that aggregates real-time sensor data generated by cars on the road to transform into useful live road safety information.

The new HERE Safety Services suite is also capable of delivering the information to drivers through the vehicle’s head unit display or to the car’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to enhance automated safety functions of the car.

Initially, the HERE Safety Services are expected to become available to drivers and passengers across North America and Western Europe.

Automobile manufacturer BMW will be the first to install the suite in its production vehicles from the middle of this year.

“As cars become increasingly connected and intelligent, the HERE Open Location Platform is the place where the entire industry can contribute to and access differentiating products and services that not long ago seemed out of reach.”

The HERE Safety Services Suite, comprising HERE Hazard Warnings and HERE Road Signs, procures information from various on-board sensors such as hazard lights, fog lights, camera, emergency brakes and electronic stability control.

Developed jointly by HERE and BMW, HERE Hazard Warnings will notify the drivers and passengers with information about potential road hazards, accidents and extreme weather events.

Latest traffic signage information about the route, including speed limit data, will be provided by HERE Road Signs.

The HERE Safety Services also support mapping technology for automated driving by developing the foundation for HERE HD Live Map, which uses car sensor data to identify real time changes on the road.
