HERE Technologies has introduced a new over-the-air (OTA) solution for connected vehicles to ensure secure data, software and firmware transfer between the Cloud and a vehicle.

The new HERE OTA Connect solution is expected to enable wireless software updates to improve vehicle functions.

HERE Technologies Automotive SVP Ralf Herrtwich said: “OTA technology is the next big advancement in keeping vehicles safe and up-to-date with less cost to both automakers and car owners.

“HERE OTA Connect provides cost and time-saving benefits by enabling automakers to update vehicles remotely, such as in large recall campaigns.

“It also opens up revenue streams for automakers by giving their customers the ability to purchase new vehicle upgrades and features at the touch of a button.”

“HERE OTA Connect is expected to reduce the risks associated with the deployment of new driving technology on roads and highways.”

An OTA update refers to the wireless installation of new data or software to connected devices, a technology that is used by mobile carriers to update phone settings and software.

Leveraging this concept, HERE OTA Connect uses open-source technology and is designed to be integrated into the vehicle by the automobile manufacturer from the backend.

Though it is currently available as a standalone product, OTA Connect is expected to be combined with other HERE automotive software suites and services in the following months.

HERE OTA Connect is expected to reduce the risks associated with the deployment of new driving technology on roads and highways.

As connected and automated vehicles require strong security measures, the solution utilises Uptane, which is a security framework designed for software used on connected and autonomous cars.

HERE Technologies OTA senior director Armin Schmidt said: “HERE OTA Connect not only provides a highly secure framework against hacker hijacking, but it speeds up the process of getting important safety updates out in a cost-effective and scalable manner.”
