Global intelligent transport systems (ITS) provider Kapsch TrafficCom has secured a contract for providing technical operations for toll systems in Bulgaria.

Under the contract, Kapsch Traffic Solutions, a consortium of various Kapsch TrafficCom Group companies, will be responsible for providing technical operations for the passenger vehicle e-vignette system and the electronic truck toll systems.

Kapsch Traffic Solutions will provide services for five years.

Under the contract, Kapsch Traffic Solutions will provide a wide range of services such as maintenance of all hardware and software and the operation of the data centers.

Kapsch TrafficCom said that the consortium secured the contract through a bidding process, and the total project volume amounts to around €60m.

Kapsch Traffic Solutions claimed that it built and implemented the passenger vehicle e-vignette system and the electronic truck toll system in Bulgaria. These systems were handed over to the state in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Last November, Kapsch TrafficCom completed the installation of the all-electronic tolling (AET) system designed for the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) in the US.

The new AET system enabled commuters travelling on NYSTA-operated roads to pay their vehicle tolls via automatic electronic toll collection (ETC).

Kapsch stated that the sensors and lasers were deployed on the Kapsch gantries to automatically determine vehicle class and calculate the toll rate accordingly.

For this project, Kapsch used a redundant and dual central host system, walkable gantries, and bracket-mounted equipment for performing toolless maintenance without lane closures.
