Swarco Group’s wholly owned subsidiary McCain has introduced variable speed limit signs (VSLS) in a bid to simplify speed limit adjustments for road agencies.

The VSLS is powered by Swarco’s LED technology that makes viewing and maintenance of signs better than the conventional ones.

McCain sign product manager Matt Eichenfield said: “As a manufacturing powerhouse for the last 30 years, creating high-quality products for ITS [Intelligent Transportation Systems] is what we do best.

“But what truly differentiates the variable speed limit sign is the use of Swarco’s precision-optics technology.

“The technology enables us to deliver unparalleled sign clarity, visibility, and contrast ratios, while reducing energy consumption by nearly 50% when compared to other leading brands.”

The new VSLS will enable road-operating agencies to adjust the speed limit on roadways according to current road and traffic conditions, thereby improving safety and traffic movement.

It is expected to be useful during heavy traffic situation and adverse weather conditions.

By decreasing the risk associated with higher driving speeds, VSLS is said to be capable of reducing crash chances by up to 30%.

The variable speed limit signs are 6ft tall, with 18in or 22in characters to ensure easy readability by the drivers and motoring public.

Developed to NEMA TS 4 industry standards, the signs exhibit high-quality aluminium construction and can be installed in nearly any environment for temporary or permanent requirements.

Established in 1987, McCain focuses on developing advanced traffic control equipment and integrated transportation systems.
