New York is set to invest more than $100m to rehabilitate and enhance roadways that were damaged by adverse weather last winter.

The state funding, announced by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, will support 84 projects and the reconstruction of around 1,000 lane miles of pavement across the state.

It will also complement around $300m of funding previously committed to repave nearly 1,600 lane miles of road across New York.

Governor Cuomo said: “These investments are critical to our transportation system and essential for community growth and regional economic competitiveness.

“By infusing more than $100m in state funds to revitalise our roads, we are enhancing the quality of life for all New Yorkers while ensuring every traveller remains safe throughout the Empire State.”

“These investments are critical to our transportation system and essential for community growth and regional economic competitiveness.”

The state budget already had $65m in Extreme Weather Recovery funds and this additional $100m, to be provided through Harsh Winter Paving Initiative, is to help the renewal project.

As well as making the state motorways safer and more efficient, the project is expected to support growth of tourism and local businesses.

The rehabilitation project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Senator Joseph E. Robach said: “It is critically important that when motorists use roadways across New York State that they that are safe and in optimal condition.

“I was pleased in this year’s budget, the Senate, Assembly and Governor committed significant funding to make necessary repairs to roads and infrastructure in every region of our state in response to the effects of the winter season.”

This year, the state budget has allocated $743m, which will be distributed to local governments for road and bridge repair and modernisation.
