Australia’s Queensland Motorways has replaced the conventional cash booth tolling system on the Gateway and Logan motorways with a new free-flow tolling system.

The integrated tolling solution links roadside sensor and imaging technology to transaction, billing and marketing systems, eliminating the need for toll booths.

The new system helps the agency in digitally capturing and analysing information about the vehicles using the motorways as well as to access traffic conditions, manage congestion, advise motorists of travel times and alert them to roadworks and incidents, said the agency.

The system saves motorists ten minutes on the Logan and Gateway motorway network and has helped reduce traffic congestion on the route by 80% since its launch.

The system has been developed by IBM, Thales and the Logan Alliance along with the agency.
