NorthConnex

A consortium consisting of Lend Lease and Bouygues Construction Australia has won a A$2.6bn (€1.9bn) contract from Transurban to design and build tunnel for the NorthConnex project in Sydney, Australia.

Bouygues Construction’s share in the contract is worth approximately A$1.3bn (€900m).

Bouygues Construction deputy chief executive Philippe Bonnave said: "This new contract is further proof of our ability to meet major technical challenges and to carry out large-scale infrastructure projects in Australia in partnership with well-established local contractors.

"NorthConnex is a project with a high environmental value, which will relieve the suburbs of Sydney of motorway traffic congestion while conserving natural spaces."

Under the terms of the contract, a 9km twin-tube tunnel will be designed and built for the NorthConnex project.

The two tunnels will connect the M1 Pacific Highway’s south at Wahroonga to the M2 Hills Motorway, joining it at the Pennant Hills Road interchange.

The project will divert roughly 5,000 trucks a day from the Pennant Hills Road upon completion and is expected to improve regional and national freight transport in the region.

Car drivers can also avoid 20 sets of traffic lights and will be to reduce up to 15min from their journey times.

The project will be designed and built by a 50/50 partnership between Bouygues Construction Australia and Australian engineering company Lend Lease.

Works are scheduled to last four years for the project, which is expected to create 2,500 jobs.

Bouygues Construction Australia is a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction.
