Chinese engineers have developed an elevated bus that can pass over traffic jams.

The Transit Explore Bus (TEB) runs along rail lines fixed at the side of the road, just like trams.

Each bus has the capacity to accomodate 1,400 passengers.

It can travel at a speed of up to 60mph.

"The biggest advantage is that the bus will save lots of road space."

Vehicles measuring a height of two metres or less can drive underneath the bus.

The cost of building this elevated bus is 20% of the cost of developing an underground train, reported The Independent.

The project's chief engineer Song Youzhou told Xinhua: "The biggest advantage is that the bus will save lots of road space."

According to Youzhou, given the simplicity of the supporting infrastructure, TEB can be manufactured quickly.

One TEB can replace 40 standard buses, thereby significantly reducing pollution.

Qinhuangdao, a coastal city located 300km from Beijing, will see the first deployment of TEB this year.

Traffic jams in China had overtaken that of the US in 2009.

Last year, around 21 million cars were sold in China.
