UK-based Coastin has completed work on the M53 Bidston Moss viaduct strengthening project, three months ahead of the 31 December 2011 contract deadline.

The £89.9m project involved the strengthening of HA and 45T of HB, as well as traffic loading and the removal of weight restrictions upon completion.

The work required a box girder design innovation, and 100km of new weld has been used in confined space conditions to strengthen the 3.7km of steel box girder.

The work involved the Highways Agency, Costain as principal contractor, and Amey as designer.
