Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) has received a contract extension from Australia’s Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) for ongoing operations and maintenance of its Sydney Transport Management Centre (TMC) central computer hub, which manages traffic system and road network throughout New South Wales (NSW).

The extension of the contract includes the option to continue till June 2020.

Cubic has been associated for TMS with TfNSW since 1997.

In 1997, the company was contracted to develop and install its Incident Management System (IMS) technology in order to manage traffic systems for the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

"This extension confirms the foundation on which the TMC will continue building world-leading transportation solutions that benefit the people of NSW."

Since then, it has added features to its IMS technology in order to meet the growing needs of TfNSW transportation planners and help them manage traffic congestion and bolster road safety for drivers.

Sydney TMC executive director Scott White said: "This extension confirms the foundation on which the TMC will continue building world-leading transportation solutions that benefit the people of NSW."

CTS Asia-Pacific senior vice-president and managing director Tom Walker said: "We see this contract extension as a testament to the strong relationship between the two organisations. It opens up the opportunity for us to introduce NextTraffic, our next-generation, integrated multi-modal traffic and transport platform that is part of CTS’s NextCity vision."

The company’s IMS technology is equipped with features such as automatic incident detection and response, variable message and speed-control signing and traffic data collection.

Cubic’s IMS operates 24/7 to provide real-time information to several operators on the TfNSW road network in order to help reduce the impact of traffic congestion.
