Delphi Automotive has signed an agreement to acquire nuTonomy for $450m in a bid to speed up its plans to supply autonomous vehicle systems to automakers.

With the acquisition, Delphi aims to accelerate its commercialisation of autonomous driving (AD) and Automated Mobility on-Demand (AMoD) solutions for automakers and new mobility customers worldwide.

It will also enable the company to serve new customers and markets in the growing mobility space.

The transaction forms the latest in the series of investments made by Delphi, including the acquisition of AD software developer Ottomatika and data service companies Control-Tec and Movimento.

Delphi president and CEO Kevin Clark said: “The combination of the nuTonomy and Ottomatika AD teams, along with Delphi’s industry-leading portfolio of perception systems and smart vehicle architecture solutions, further enhances our competitive position as the industry’s most formidable provider of autonomous mobility solutions.

“This transaction is another example of our ongoing dedication to developing, implementing, and commercialising the highest performing and safest AD system available.”

Founded in 2013, nuTonomy is currently developing a full-stack AD software solution for the global AMoD market and will continue to operate in Boston.

Delphi will have additional AD operations in Pittsburgh, Singapore, Santa Monica and Silicon Valley, after the acquisition concludes.

Following the combination, Delphi aims to roll-out 60 autonomous cars across three continents by the end of this year and continue to advance technology development and fleet expansion programme.

The transaction, subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close by the end of this year.
