The European Commission has launched its new ‘Going Abroad’ smartphone app that provides travellers with complete information on road traffic rules in the EU.

The new app offers key road safety information for all EU countries and features a road safety quiz, as well as a memory game.

European Commission vice-president Siim Kallas said: "The summer holiday period is the busiest time on Europe’s roads. It is so easy to take your car abroad, but many people don’t realise that rules and road signs differ across the EU.

"The app provides convenient and user-friendly information to help minimise this risk."

The app also informs users about obligations to wear seat belts in cars, as well as safety helmets on bikes and motorbikes.

The app launch comes before the start of the summer holiday period, which is considered the most dangerous period for road traffic with an average of 50% more traffic-related deaths.

The EU’s strategic target is to reduce road deaths by 50% between 2010 and 2020, as well as start focusing its efforts on decreasing the number of serious road traffic injuries.
