A joint venture team comprising Granite Construction Company and Archer Western has secured the design-build contract of Phase I of South Capitol Street Corridor project from the US District of Columbia Department of Transportation.

Granite will report its 50% share of the $441m joint venture project into backlog in the second quarter of the 2017 fiscal year.

The JV team will carry out the replacement of the existing Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge over the Anacostia River in Washington DC.

"Once the bridge is complete, it will have six lanes and improved access for cyclists and pedestrians."

Under the contract, the team will have to construct two new approaches and reconstruct a portion of I-295, adjacent to the new bridge.

Once the work is complete, the bridge will have six lanes and provide improved access for cyclists and pedestrians.

The project is intended to provide increased safety for pedestrians and vehicles, and support economic development in the area.

Construction works have already started and will conclude in December 2021.
