UAE-based contractor Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG) has received an AED220m ($59.9m) road project in Doha, Qatar.

The Azizya East project is located 9km west of central Doha, and includes construction and improvement works as part of the local roads and drainage programme (LRDP).

Operating as Leighton Contracting (Qatar) WLL, HLG will be responsible for providing infrastructure, roads, utilities and drainage for 740 residential plots spanning 72ha, with an internal network of roads ranging in corridor widths from 16m to 32m.

The 13.5km-long road network will include traffic signal controlled junctions, along with a number of simple priority junctions.

"This new project proves the strong group’s presence in the country and its successful work with government entities such as Ashghal."

HLG CEO and managing director José Antonio López-Monís said: "Qatar is a very important market for HLG and this new project proves the strong group’s presence in the country and its successful work with government entities such as Ashghal."

Work on the Azizya East project is expected to be completed in November.

In March last year, HLG and Al Jaber Engineering joint venture had secured a QR6.15bn ($1.7bn) contract by Ashghal, Qatar’s Public Works Authority, which covers the design and construction of the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route (P023), near Doha.

The project includes 56km of roadworks and five main interchanges that will cater to the projected traffic increase in the region.

HLG is part of the Leighton Group, Australia’s project development and contracting group with annual revenues exceeding $18bn.
