India has unveiled a plan to build a six-lane 6,500km of highway, a four lane 24,700km highway and will upgrade 20,000km of highways, as well as develop 1,000 km of expressways under the national highways development programme (NHDP).

Under the programme about 15,000km of highways have already been completed and about 10,000km of highway is under construction.

The country plans to carry out 25,000km of highway over the next three years through a combination of public private partnership (PPP), and engineering procurement and construction (EPC).

The country has 70,934km of highway, which serves as the arterial network. Itt plans to upgrade 20km of national highways a day, extending 7,300km in a year.

The Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has identified projects of about 10,000km to ensure the upgrade of 7,300km during 2011-12.
