India’s Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, also known as Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, plans to release work orders for a coastal road project worth Rs120bn ($1.8bn) by October this year.

Around seven jetties will be built along the coastline, though the locations are yet to be identified.

The materials used for construction will come from quarries in Navi Mumbai and Alibaug through the sea and will be placed on the jetties.

"So far there have been interests shown by various countries like Belgium, Republic of China, South Korea for the construction of the coast road."

The coastal road project spanning 33km will include flyovers, bridges, roads, tunnels and interchanges, reported Times of India.

The project will include the construction of a sea wall.

Recently, the BMC had divided the project into four different packages to invite expressions of interest (EOI) from global contractors.

Package I involves work from Priyadarshani Park to Baroda Palace while Package II includes construction from Baroda Palace to the Worli-end.

A civic official was quoted by Times of India as saying: "There are a total of seven packages that will be circulated.

"Out of these, we have already tabled four before the standing committee members.

"We are targeting October 1 for issuing the work orders.

"So far there have been interests shown by various countries like Belgium, Republic of China, South Korea for the construction of the coast road.

"For every package that we have circulated, one jetty will be constructed to offload the construction material.

Several restrictions have been put in place for firms interested in securing the contracts. A joint venture with up to three companies will only be allowed to bid for the project.
