Indian construction and engineering company Punj Lloyd has been awarded a Rs12.7bn ($211.4m) expressway project in Yemen.

Funded by Saudi Development Fund (SDF), the project involves construction of 42km, 2×3 lane dual carriageway project between Doraigh and Noubat Dokaim from Yemen’s Ministry of Public Works & Highways.

The scope of the work under the project will be located 60km from the port city of Aden, and comprises construction of 210 lane-km new carriageway greenfield project, as well as additional roadworks and excavation of more than ten million cubic metres.

"Our existing expertise in this sector coupled with our strong assets of equipment and manpower, was a strong determinant in our winning this order amidst tough global competition."

It also involves two major concrete overpass bridges, box & pipe culvert construction, along with associated infrastructure work.

Speaking about the project, Punj Lloyd MEA and CIS Buildings & Infrastructure president and CEO Pardeep Tandon said this is the company’s first major expressway project in the Middle East.

"Our existing expertise in this sector, coupled with our strong assets of equipment and manpower, was a strong determinant in our winning this order amidst tough global competition," Tandon said.

Punj Lloyd already executed work on the offsites and utilities of Yemen LNG project.

The Punj Lloyd Group is a diversified international conglomerate delivering EPC services in energy and infrastructure, along with engineering and manufacturing capabilities in the defence sector.

With the new order in Yemen, the group’s order backlog stands at Rs233.76bn ($3.4bn).
