The Zambian Government has selected Kapsch TrafficCom’s joint venture (JV) with Zambian company Lamise Trading (Lamise) to help improve road safety and traffic management in the country.

Under a 17-year nationwide concession contract, the JV team will be responsible for the design, installation and operations of systems and solutions for traffic surveillance, vehicle speed enforcement, inspection and registration.

The contract has come into effect immediately with the signature of Zambian officials.

Through its Road Traffic and Safety Agency, the Zambian Government intends to significantly increase road safety and traffic management.

During the first three years of the operation, the revenues are expected to be in the range of €90m to €110m.

Lamise Trading chairman Walid El Nahas said: “By installing and operating Kapsch TrafficCom’s leading-edge equipment and systems the joint venture will create some five hundred jobs, provide a boost to the economy in Zambia through improved road transport, and reduce the number of traffic accidents and their impact.”

According to the Zambian Government, there has been a sharp rise in the road fatalities from ten per 100,000 inhabitants to 13.8 per 100,000 over the last decade until 2016.
