Kapsch TrafficCom has been awarded a contract to supply onboard units (OBUs) for Norway’s AutoPASS electronic toll collection, beginning in 2014.

The development is part of the Norwegian Public Road Administration’s plan to adapt the standards for on-board units to the European Norm EN15509 and replace the new AutoPASS OBUs that are presently in use.

Kapsch will supply the first batch of its OBUs, with the total quantity scheduled to be delivered over the next four years.

"The trust shown underlines our excellence in the development of OBUs."

The precise extent of Kapsch’s share in the delivery will be determined in consecutive tenders under the lifetime of the frame contract.

Kapsch executive board member André Laux said: "Norway is an important strategic market to us. The trust shown by the Norwegian Road Administration underlines our excellence in the development and production of OBUs."

The OBUs designated for AutoPASS are produced by Kapsch’s unit, Kapsch Components, which is located in Vienna.

This contract marks the company’s first order in Norway.

Recently, Kapsch also announced the commencement of e-tolling in South Africa, with the number of active accounts rising consistently following the beginning of the e-toll project in Gauteng, on 3 December.
