The London Borough of Camden in the UK is testing a new smart parking system in order to provide an improved parking experience to drivers in key on-street locations.

Given that more than 500,000 vehicles travel on an average every day through Camden, parking space has become limited and not always easy to find, which leads to traffic congestion.

Camden has deployed Smart Parking’s SmartPark solution on a trial basis.

Around 367 RFID-equipped SmartEye vehicle detection sensors, connected through SmartLink data transmitters in and around central Camden and Camden Town are being installed.

Parking spaces that are part of this pilot include at Caversham Road, Charlotte Street, Fortess Road, Gaisford Street, Grangeway, Greenland Road, Islip Street, Mornington Crescent, Percy Street and Plender Street.

With real-time occupancy data being fed into the RingGo cashless parking application, drivers can get an actual view of parking spaces close to them. The app guides them to the nearest unoccupied parking space, which in turn cuts down the time taken looking for a vacant space.

Drivers can also pay for their parking session with a credit card by using the same app.

Smart Parking’s SmartRep software collects and then reviews live information on how parking spaces are being utilised. With exact vehicle-by-vehicle, minute-by-minute data on actual usage of parking spaces, the council can efficiently manage parking spaces, thereby reducing congestion.
