ETC

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has received an order from Vietnam’s Innovative Technology Development (ITD) to deliver devices for a Japan-standard electronic toll collection system (ETC).

The devices, which will be used on an expressway in Vietnam, include 50,000 onboard units for automobiles, as well as antennas at toll gates.

Mitsubishi has already begun detail designing towards the start of their delivery to ITD in July 2015.

Said to be part of an order for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) received from the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC), the ETC system devices will be introduced on the 55km Ho Chi Minh City – Dau Giay section of the route from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho in Mekong Delta.

"Mitsubishi has finalised a manufacturing and sales agreement with ITD, which has an equipment procurement contract with the joint venture company formed by Toshiba, Hitachi and ITOCHU."

Completed with loan assistance from the Japanese Government, the section is part of Vietnam’s North-South Expressway.

With regard to the onboard units and antennas, Mitsubishi has finalised a manufacturing and sales agreement with ITD, which has an equipment procurement contract with the joint venture company formed by Toshiba, Hitachi and ITOCHU.

The ETC system on order uses active-type short-range communication, the standard ETC system specification in Japan.

The scalable system, for which trial operations were conducted in Malaysia, can also provide various traffic related information.

Vietnam is considering construction of a total of 6,000km of expressway in a bid to support its expanding economy and seeks to ease traffic congestion that is caused by the increasing number of vehicles on the roads.

Mitsubishi plans to bolster marketing activities of the Japanese standard ETC system globally.
