Mobileye has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to integrate its road experience management (REM) technology into Nissan’s fleet.

With the integration of the new REM mapping technology, Nissan’s vehicles will be able to use Mobileye’s lane recognition and location system.

The technology supports crowdsourced real-time information, which can be used to identify exact locations and provide high-definition lane data that helps in autonomous driving.

"We view the endorsement of three of the world’s largest global automakers as an acknowledgement of the importance of our innovative proprietary REM technology for autonomous driving."

It makes use of Mobileye’s EyeQ processing platforms to identify landmarks and gather roadway information at bandwidths as low as 10KB/km.

Mobileye co-founder, chairman and chief technology officer Professor Amnon Shashua was quoted by Traffic Technology Today as saying: "We leveraged advanced artificial intelligence, used for creating environmental models from camera input, in order to create maps based on local coordinate systems, while requiring very low bandwidth.

"The low bandwidth of the model, and the fact that it requires only a camera, which is already available in most new car models as part of the trend toward growing driver assistance deployment, enables the map creation and update to be managed by a cooperative crowdsourcing mechanism."

Nissan is the third large automaker to have partnered with Mobileye for the integration of REM technology, following General Motors and Volkswagen.

Shashua added: "Adding Nissan and Renault as part of the Renault-Nissan alliance, as a REM technology customer is another important step in the creation of a continuously updated high-definition data for drivable paths with precise localisation that will meet the requirement for full redundancy to enable safe autonomous driving including city autonomous driving.

"Renault-Nissan alliance is one of the largest global automakers and a sizable OEM customer of Mobileye in both ADAS and autonomous driving."
