The second phase of the $421m Danjiang Bridge in Taiwan has begun, bringing the project one step closer to completion in 2020.

The bridge is being built over the Tamsui River in New Taipei City.

It is expected to ease traffic congestion and cover the estuary of the Tamsui River, which is also called as Danjiang River.

The 6km, 44m-wide bridge Danjiang Bridge will link Tamsui city to Bali districts and bolster local transportation network, reported China Post.

The Directorate General of Highways was quoted by China Post as saying that following completion of bridge, the driving distance between Tamsui and Bali will be reduced by 15km, which in turn will cut down journey time by 25min during peak traffic hours.

The two districts are currently connected by the Guandu Bridge, approximately 10km from the estuary of Tamsui River.

The Danjiang bridge will reduce traffic of Guandu Bridge and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, while boost the development of the port of Taipei.

The first phase of the project began in 2014.

The complete project will feature a light-rail track between the two places, which are popular tourist destinations.

Both sides of the bridge will feature a 5m-wide sidewalk designed for pedestrians and bicycles.
