A consortium of construction companies including the Slovak subsidiary of Strabag has signed a €427 million contract to construct a stretch of the D1 motorway in northern Slovakia.

The consortium comprises four partner companies; Doprastav (32%), Váhostav (32%), Strabag (32%) and Metrostav (4%); Strabag’s share in the project amounts to about €140m.

The 11km-long motorway section runs between Hrièovské Podhradie and Lietavská Lúèka, with construction works comprising eleven bridges, two tunnels, along with all access roads.

Total construction period is expected to be 48 months.

"Slovakia is showing that it is pressing ahead with investments in infrastructure."

Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel said: "After the R2 expressway, this is already our second large infrastructure order in Slovakia within the past few weeks. Slovakia is showing that it is pressing ahead with investments in infrastructure.

The D1 motorway is part of the E 50 international transport route that runs from Paris via Nuremberg and Prague through Ukraine to Russia.

The motorway is expected to be completed during 2020, as a six-lane motorway from Bratislava to Trnava, a four-lane motorway from Trnava to Michalovce and a two-lane highway from Michalovce to the border with Ukraine.

European construction firm Strabag has specialised group companies operating under a number of different brands such as STRABAG and Züblin.

It provides services in all fields of the construction industry covering the entire construction value chain.
