European technology group for construction services Strabag has secured a contract to build a section of European Route E16.

This route is considered to be an important link that connects the Norwegian capital of Oslo and the country’s second largest city of Bergen.

For this project, STARBAG will serve as the main contractor. This will be the company’s first project as a sole contractor in Norway.

The value of the contract is around €37m and it is expected to be complete in 2018.

Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel said: "After the Ulriken Rail Tunnel, we are happy to be realising another interesting infrastructure project in Norway."

The project covers Øye-Eidsbru section, which is located between Oslo and Bergen. The scope of the work includes new construction of 4.5 km of main road and 2.1 km of side roads.

The company will also be responsible for constructing a 1,970m long tunnel using conventional blasting.

This section of the E16 lies in a mountainous location known as Filefjell, and the road will pass its highest point in this area at 1,013m above sea level.

Temperatures in the area can reach up to -25°C in the winter and can experience massive snowfall.
