TomTom (TOM2), the Netherlands-based company that provides navigation and mapping products, has introduced its real-time traffic service in Argentina and Colombia.

With the inclusion of these two countries, TOM2 has enhanced its coverage in South America to four countries, after Brazil and Chile, and extended its global reach to 54 countries.

TomTom traffic and travel information head Ralf-Peter Schäfer said: “Traffic congestion remains a major problem for many countries around the world, particularly in larger metropolitan areas.

“Argentina and Colombia are no different and now we can offer data to enable informed routing decisions taking into account the dynamically changing situation on the road from TomTom’s real-time traffic information.”

Helping the expansion in countries has been the continuous growth in the supply of GPS location trace information to the TomTom traffic fusion engine which has now surpassed 500 million smartphones, transport systems and portable navigation devices.

"We can offer data to enable informed routing decisions taking into account the dynamically changing situation on the road from TomTom’s real-time traffic information."

The increased data volumes would provide a platform for the further geo-expansion opportunities this year as well as in the future.

TomTom further stated that with the introduction of real time traffic services in these two countries, up-to-date information on road conditions such as traffic congestions, roadworks and closures will also be offered.

The information will enable drivers to find suitable alternative route and help them to avoid the worst areas and enable them to save significant time during their journeys.
