US DOT has signed a deal with Connecticut Department of Transport to provide a $275.3m grant for the construction of the $567m New Britain-Hartford busway.

The project will span the 9.4 mile corridor between downtown New Britain and downtown Hartford to relieve traffic congestion on I-84.

The project will have 11 stations, park and ride connections to other suburban transit service, and 31 new clean fuel buses for service in New Britain, Newington, West Hartford, and Hartford as well as connectting to Amtrak intercity rail service at Hartford’s Union Station.

Additionally, a multi-use trail will be built near the busway along a five mile stretch between New Britain and Newington, providing pedestrian and bicycle access at five stations.

The project is scheduled to complete within two years.
