The City of Los Angeles, US, and Xerox have launched a new multimodal smartphone application that allows city residents to access data on different modes of transport.

The new ‘Go LA’ application is designed by the Xerox workers in Webster.

It will help the Los Angeles residents find the cheapest, shortest and most environmentally sustainable means of transport to their desired destination.

"Go LA will help the city glean important information they can use to advance their transportation systems."

Go LA provides information on all available public and private transportation options such as driving, walking, biking or public transit, or even on transportation options, including Lyft, Uber, FlitWays and Zipcar.

It also provides comparisons on time, distance, costs, calorie burnt and carbon emissions, enabling the users to go for the best option according to their needs.

Xerox mobility solutions senior vice-president David Cummins: "There are individual apps for public transit, car sharing, and other transportation options but the Go LA app captures the array of options in a hyper-local way, mixing and matching both public and private transportation options.

"Beyond the seamless travel experience for citizens, Go LA will help the city glean important information they can use to advance their transportation systems."

The app is available on all iOS and Android platforms.

Users can also personalise their commuting options in their ‘My Rides’ section of the app by saving the journeys they make often.

The destination and preferred travel mode data that is anonymously shared with the city helps it redesign and update the travel systems, and also optimise the capital spend.

Los Angeles department of transportation general manager Seleta Reynolds said: "Xerox’s work could help us learn where to improve infrastructure for people who walk, roll, bike, take transit and drive; it’s invaluable insight to help make Los Angeles more livable and enjoyable."
