Construction firm YIT has secured a new contract to upgrade Ring Road III section between the Lahdenväylä and Porvoonväylä motorways.

The €42m contract was awarded following a competitive tendering procedure organised by the Finnish Transport Agency.

Work on the project will begin in the first quarter of this year, with completion expected in 2016.

The contract will see YIT upgrade the existing road as well as the implement a traffic monitoring system, the construction of a multi-level interchanges as well as ramps from Länsimäentie in Vantaa onto Motorway 7 towards Helsinki.

"We have been able to accept these contracts with great confidence."

The new traffic monitoring system will cover about 40km and combine the current telematics systems into one system on Highway E18.

Finnish Transport Agency project manager Antti Koski said: "Ring Road III is one of Finland’s most heavily used roads. The upgrade project will improve traffic flow and minimise congestion on a road where the volume of traffic is expected to increase dramatically.

"Multi-level interchanges and ramps as well as third lanes will be added on the section between Lahdenväylä and Porvoonväylä."
