Australia’s NSW Government has announced that it will provide a further A$205m ($147.26m) to complete the duplication work for the Nelson Bay Road project.

Once re-elected, the government will fund the section of Nelson Bay Road from Williamtown to Bobs Farm as it is used by more than 25,000 motorists a day.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said: “As the Hunter and NSW continue to grow, so does the number of motorists using our roads. Nelson Bay Road is a crucial connection for residents, but can become very busy during holiday periods.

“That’s no surprise, since Port Stephens is one of the most beautiful areas of the state, but it’s important for residents and visitors that the roads are meeting demand.

“That’s why we’re delivering major road upgrades and improvements to make it easier, faster and safer for people to get around.

“Nelson Bay Road is a crucial connection for residents, but can become very busy during holiday periods.”

“We are planning these improvements to support tourism and local industries as a major economic driver in the Port Stephens area.”

In May 2015, the NSW Government concluded duplication of another section of Nelsons Bay Road, from Bobs Farm to Anna Bay.

The latest funding commitment is over and above A$70m ($50.27m) already allocated, which has funded planning, development and initial works.

Stretching from Stockton Bridge to the Church Street intersection, the 43km Nelson Bay Road serves as the main link from Newcastle to Newcastle Airport and Williamtown RAAF base.

It is believed that duplication of Nelson Bay Road from Williamtown to Bobs Farm would enhance safety for travellers.
