The Philippines Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH) has signed a PHP5.27bn ($100m) contract with two Chinese firms to build two bridge projects in the country.

The contract, which involves the construction of Binondo-Intramuros and Estrella-Pantallon Bridge Projects, was signed with consultant CCCC Highway Consultant and contractor China Road and Bridge.

Signing of the deal will allow the commencement works of survey, design and construction works of the two bridges.

After completion, the two Chinese-funded bridges are expected to become new landmarks in the cities of Manila, Makati, and Mandaluyong.

The funding from China will be utilised to carry out design and construction works, while DPWH will be in charge of the road right-of-way acquisition with the DPWH Unified Project Management Office-Road Management Cluster 1.

“After completion, the two Chinese-funded bridges are expected to become new landmarks in the cities of Manila, Makati, and Mandaluyong.”

CCCC Highway Consultant will conduct detailed engineering design and construction supervision of the two bridges and the contractor China Road and Bridge will be responsible for the civil works.

The scope of the civil works includes the construction of main bridge, approach bridge and connection road. Traffic engineering, installation of lighting and other associated facilities are also part of the work package.

The civil works of the project are scheduled to be completed within 30 months.

Following the completion, the project contractor will be responsible to repair all damages and defects on the bridges at its own expense for the period of 12 months.

Furthermore, they will also be responsible for any structural defect or failure on the bridges within 15 years for permanent structures and five years for semi-permanent structures.
