A consortium of construction company PORR and Unibep have secured a $109m (€90m) contract from the Polish General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

The consortium will be responsible for designing and constructing a section of the S19 expressway from Krynice (DK65) via Dobrzyniewo to Białystok Zachód (S8).

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “Being awarded another contract as part of the S19 megaproject once again underlines our leading position in road and infrastructure construction.

“We are proud that the client relies on our expertise and that we are able to contribute our comprehensive know-how to this infrastructure project, which is so essential for Poland.”

A dual carriageway spanning more than 10km will be built as part of the contract.

Additionally, the consortium will construct the Białystok West junction and associated reconstruction along roughly 1.9km of the S8.

The road junction will link the S19, presently under construction, with the existing S8.

The S19 expressway is said to be an important route, which will connect the cities of Hrodna, Białystok, Lublin, Rzeszów and Košice.

The construction firm, along with its partner Unibep, will also be responsible for developing 13 engineering structures along the route.

These structures include two bridges over the Supraśl and Biała rivers and a railway bridge over the Białystok-Ełk track.

Construction works are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2022 and complete by 2024.

In March, PORR secured another contract for building new roads in Poland from the GDDKiA.

The company was contracted to design and build a 10.55km stretch of road on the S19 expressway running from Kuźnica to Sokółka, as well as a section of the DK19 national road.
