Austria-based construction company PORR has secured a contract for building new roads in Poland.

The company will design and build a 10.55km stretch of road on the S19 expressway running from Kuźnica to Sokółka, as well as a section of the DK19 national road.

The €115m ($137m) contract was obtained from the Polish General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “As part of the Via Carpathia, the S19 is an important component of the trans-European transport network.

“Having been awarded the contract for the construction of the section between Kuźnica and Sokółka, we are making a significant contribution to a better north-south connection between Belarus and Slovakia and again proving our expertise in infrastructure development.”

The company will also build road interchanges at Kuźnica and Sokółka Północ as well as 12 engineering structures, including a bridge and a railway viaduct.

Construction work will begin next year after permission for implementing the project (ZRID) has been granted.

The 570km S19 expressway will connect the cities of Hrodna, Białystok, Lublin, Rzeszów and Košice. It will also serve as a major north-south link between Belarus and Slovakia.

The expressway is seen as an important section of Via Carpathia, a planned international motorway network connecting Lithuania and Greece.

Last June, PORR secured a €115m contract from the GDDKiA to design and build the S16 expressway Olsztyn-Ełk running from Borki Wielkie to Mrągowo.
