Sharjah International Airport Authority (SAA) has collaborated with Public Works Department to open a new airport access road network to ease traffic congestion.

A new bridge is part of the 1.2km road network, which offers motorists direct access to the Sharjah International Airport. The project was completed over a period of 535 days.

The 330m suspended bridge was built with an investment of approximately AED85m ($23.2m).

Sharjah Airport Authority chairman Ali Salim Al Midfa said: “The project of developing the new entrance to the Sharjah airport comes within the framework of a comprehensive plan set by the SAA.

“The bridge was designed according to a future vision that ensures its efficiency to more than 75 years of construction.”

“The comprehensive plan includes the construction of the bridge and the development of an alternate road, which is approximately 2.1km-long, along two tracks that will run into four routes, which will contribute to the upgrading of roads leading to the airport and includes construction of more than 1,000 additional parking spaces that will accommodate passengers and airport staff vehicles, in addition to a rainwater drainage network in the parking area and the area near the airport.”

DPW general services department director Hind Al Hashimi said: “The bridge was designed according to a future vision that ensures its efficiency to more than 75 years of construction in an extended way, individually and doubly, to improve the vision and the general view of the airport. The bridge was also equipped with the latest scientific foundations of spherical pillars and noise-reducing expansion joints.”

Nearly 78 5m-tall decorative lighting poles featuring an Islamic style have been installed at the bridge.

Additionally, the bridge has 103 9m-tall light poles equipped with power saving LED lighting.

Metal barriers that have been tested for accident prevention are also featured on the bridge to provide improved security and safety for travellers.
