Swedish construction and development firm Skanska has won a contract from Riverside County Transportation Commission to widen the highway State Route 60 in Riverside, California, US.

The construction company said that the Skr860m ($96m) road contract will be included in its US order bookings for the first quarter of 2019.

The contract includes widening a 7km (4.5 miles) stretch of State Route 60 to accommodate additional truck climbing lanes on the east and westbound sides.

Additionally, the contractor will upgrade the inside and outside shoulders to standard widths. The company will also be responsible for replacing the existing asphalt concrete pavement with plain concrete.

“Construction work on the project is likely to start in May and is slated for completion by December 2021.”

State Route 60 is around 122km-long and a major transportation corridor. The highway runs almost parallel with Interstate 10 and works as a bypass alternate route east-west route through the area.

Skanska is also constructing a $400m Pensacola Bay Bridge replacement project in Florida, which was awarded to the company by Florida Department of Transportation in July 2016. Work began a year later in July 2017.

The bridge is scheduled to be complete by mid-2021. It will replace the existing bridge, which was built in 1960. It carries approximately 55,000 vehicles between Pensacola and Gulf Breeze every day.
